Skales, full name Raoul John Njeng-jerig is a Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter. The name Skales was coined from the quote “Seek Knowledge Acquire Large Enterprise Skills. “
Skales was born in Kaduna on the 1st of April 1991, but he is from Edo State. He is the only child of his parents and was raised in an active Christian home. His interest in music began within the cocoon of his mother’s cassette store. According to Skales, his mother is his sole inspirator; she sold sugarcane and bread to give him the best.
In 2000, he began writing rap songs in Kaduna while still in primary school. By the year 2007, he traveled to Jos to work with Jesse Jagz and Jeremiah Gyang, as he began his tertiary education at the University of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria.
Nonetheless, Skales left the University of Jos after his first year to begin studies at the Leadcity University and graduated with Bachelor’s degree in Office Management and Technology.
As stated earlier, Skales began his music career while at the University, in his first year at the University of Jos, he took part in the Rain True Search Competition and won the competition, North Central Region. His debut single must shine “Must shine” was released in 2009 which awarded him so much recognition.
According to an interview with the Daily Newspaper in 2013, Skales described himself as an entertainer whose music is influenced by his environment. In 2009 he released yet another single,”Heading for a Grammy “ which he said was inspired by Kanye West “ Jesus Walks.”
Empire Mates Entertainment
In 2009, after meeting Banky W, Skales signed a record deal with Empire Mates Entertainment and thereafter released two singles, “Makulu” and “Keresimen” during the period.
Skales was one of the significant acts of the EME debut compilation bulk Empire State of Mind in 2012. In this album, he collaborated with artists like Wizkid, Shaydee, Niniyola, and D.J Exclusive on the albums five singles,”Baddest Boy,” Get down tonight, Sun Mo Mo, Ko Mo Lee, and Change. He was also a key participant at the EME US tour, which began on the 4th of July to 2nd of September that same year. Also, Skales supported Wizkid during his tour in London in 2012.
At the 2013 edition (17th October 2013) of the Felabration, a yearly concert dedicated to the music icon, Skales was featured alongside several other artists. Nonetheless, at the expiration of his four-year contract, Skales left E. M. E.
OHK Music Entertainment
In May 2014, he developed his record label OHK Music which is also home to the producer Drey Beatz and other artists. By the 6th of May, he released a single “Snake body” which was produced by Jay Pizzle.
It was reported that Skales signed a record deal contract with Timaya’s Den Mama Records following his departure from E. M. E, but he debunked all of such statements, saying he never signed such deals.
In 2011, he was involved in a car accident along the Lekki – Epe expressway in Lekki, Lagos State. The car he rammed in, somersaulted leading to the death of one person and three others heavily injured.
Skales has recorded well over 200 songs and featured many artists including Banky W, Knighthons, Jeremiah, Gyang. His well-known songs include “Komole,” “My Baby,” “Take care of Me,” “Denge Pose,” Mukulu, Kere simi and many more.
He is currently known for his two album recorded under his record label OHK including, “Man of the Year” released in 2015 and the second I. “The Never Say Never Guy” produced in 2017.
Skales is among one of the richest; most influential Nigerian artiste estimated net value of $1.8 million.
