Olu Jacobs is a favorite veteran Nigerian Actor. He was born on the 12th of July 1942 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria with the birth name, Oludotun Jacobs. He is currently 75 years old.

Olu Jacobs Biography, Age

He spent his early days in Kano State where he attended Holy Trinity School.  Olu Jacobs was a member of the debating and drama clubs while in secondary school. He furthered his education in England where he trained at the Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts, London.

Olu Jacobs was inspired to go into acting from a very young age when he had the opportunity to attend one of Hubert Ogunde’s annual concert party at the Colonial Hotel in Kano where he watched the likes of Julie Coker and Ted Mukoro perform live. This urged him in his decision to go and study acting and make it into a career. He traveled to London, England in 1964 to study acting which his father was not in total support of.

Olu Jacobs Start of Acting Career

Olu Jacobs got his first acting role while in London when he accompanied his friend who was part of the acting union to an audition for a movie role where he was urged to audition and got the Judges impressed, and later got the role.  His first movie was ” the Vigilante”  which was produced by the AA production. After that,  he featured in many different British television series and shows which were displayed in the 1970s through to the 1980s. This includes: Till Death Us Do Part, The Goodies,  The Ventures, Barlow at Large, 1990, The Tomorrow People, Angels,  The Professionals, and others. In 1978, he starred in Michael Codron’s dramatic performance of Tom Stoppard’s Play ‘Night and Day’ as President Mageeba.

Olu Jacobs has starred in various international movies including the war film ‘Dogs of War’ directed by John Irwin, Roman Polanski’s adventure comedy ‘Pirates’ in 1986, ‘Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend’ also in 1986.

Olu Jacobs returned to Nigeria after 20 years of working in England to help grow the Nigerian Movie Industry.  It was not an easy decision to make as it seems as if he was coming from a place of the establishment to a place where he had to start from square one but he was well determined to achieve his dreams. He became one of the pioneers of Nollywood (the Nigerian Movie Industry) and had impacted hugely to its growth. Olu Jacobs is well known for his ability to interpret his roles well,  either as a king,  servant,  father, politician or womanizer. He serves as an inspiration to many of his younger colleagues in the Nigerian Movie Industry and upcoming acts. Olu Jacobs has starred in so many movies in Nigeria,  some of them include Cursed From Beyond, Onome in 1996, Obstacles in 1998, 21 days with Christ, Private Sin, Arsenal,  Blood Ring,  Dry, Real Love, Only Love, and many others.

He is currently the Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts (LAPA) which is a school that trains in acting,  producing, directing, script writing, costuming, makeup, photography, editing, modeling, set designing and every other aspect of movie making.

Olu Jacobs has earned so many awards while in the movie industry, some of them include :

  • The African Movie Academy Awards for the Best Actor in a Leading Role for his role in the movie ‘Dancing Heart’ in 2007.
  • The first ‘Industry Merit Award’ for ‘Outstanding Achievements in Acting’ at the Africa Magic Viewer Choice Awards AMVCA 2013.
  • Lifetime Achievement Award at the City People Movie Awards in 2015.
  • The African Movie Academy Awards Lifetime Achievement award in 2016.

Olu Jacobs wife and children

Olu Jacobs met his wife, Joke Silva when he was invited to Nigeria by the National Theatre to come and play the lead role in Wole Soyinka’s ‘The Trials of Brother Jero.’

He later got married to the actress,  Joke Silva in 1989 and they are blessed with two sons.

Many rumors have spread over the years that he was separated from his wife due to her continuous use of her maiden name, but Olu Jacobs had always denied it all and defended his wife till the end. When asked why his wife still bears her maiden name,  he replies that his wife is still her own individual and he cannot deny her and her fans her name.

Olu Jacobs believes that the secret to their successful marriage has been God’s grace,  patience and learning to be friends with his wife.  They have been married for over 30 years, and their children are equally married as well.

His wife who still bears her maiden name owns a school called the Ludofu Academy of Performing arts where she coaches upcoming actors

Contrary to rumors spread some years back, Olu Jacobs is alive and well. He recently celebrated his 75th Birthday in grand style. Meanwhile, it would interest you to know that he joined the Instagram Social media platform in 2017 and had starred in over 120 Nollywood films.
