Johnny Drille Biography and History
Johnny Drille was born on the 5th of July, 1990 in Edo state. He was also raised in Edo state and is the first child among five children born to his parents. His father was a clergyman, and therefore he grew up in s strong and robust Christian home. His entire education from primary to secondary and to tertiary school happened in Edo state. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English/Literature from the University of Benin in 2012.
Johnny Drille Music Career
Johnny Drille began singing at a very young age and did so within his father’s Church where he learned to sing alongside his siblings especially his older sister. According to him in a media interview he says “Beyond my day job, it’s almost everything to me. It’s almost like a life mission, to achieve more and more. It is love, it is passion, it is food, it is beauty, and it’s a lot of things to me.”
In 2006, he decided to teach himself music production by using cassette recorders. By the year 2013, he participated as a contestant within the 6th Edition of the MTN Project Fame competition but was marginally successful, yet he forged on.
Using his self-developed skills and lessons learned from the Project Fame Academy, he began to put out songs on social media. His musical efforts continued to go unnoticed until he released a fabulous music cover for Dija’s Awww released in February 2015.
This caught the attention of Don Jazzy who sent him a commendation message on Twitter. This contact with the CEO of Mavins Record brought a lot of publicity as well.
Don Jazzy began to follow Johnny Drrille on Twitter for a long time through his many songs released after that time, but no notable response beyond commendations was heard. Johnny Drille never relented in expecting more and went on to publish many songs and covers via his social media account. One of the notable songs is a Christian country/folk song “Love Don’t Lie” released in June that’s the same year. He followed this hit track with another hot single titled “Wait for me” which also gained so much popularity and more publicity.
He also worked with Niniola, and they released a hit single titled “Start All Over.” In February 2016, he released yet another beautiful song which he titled “ My Beautiful Love.”
Sometime in August 2016, he released a message from Don Jazzy via Twitter requesting his presence at his office and asking if he would like to join the Mavin family.
By March 2017, Johnny Drille was announced as the Mavin Record latest addition.
When asked why he chose to sing within the folk genre, he admits that it was not his intended plan and had tried out many other genres before figuring out that his right genre is folk. This discovery was made when he discovered the music of the American folk band, Mumford & Sons. His choice of Folk genre is also soared by a sincere desire to redefine the concept of love songs within Nigeria.
It would interest you to note that till date, he remains true to his musical roots; and still holds the position of Music Director within his church. He has even done a lot of underground work for many artists such as Ada and helped compose the worship tone for “Only You Can Do” by Ada.
