Didier Drogba, former Ivory Coast International and Chelsea FC footballer has announced his retirement from football after a 20 year career.
Drogba who is 40 years old is a Chelsea Football Club legend; and was one of their best strikers ever, helping the club win lots of trophies. He won the 2012 Champions League, four Premier League titles and four FA Cups with Chelsea FC. Drogba also scored 164 goals in 381 appearances for Chelsea; and is currently Ivory Coast’s all-time record goal scorer with 65 goals.
Didier Drogba last plied his trade at Phoenix Rising in the United States Soccer League, a club he partly owns.
“I wanna thank all the players, managers, teams and fans that I have met and made this journey one of a kind,” he wrote in a statement on Twitter.
“If anyone tells you your dreams are too big, just say thank you and work harder and smarter to turn them into a reality.”
He plied his trade in six different countries with most of his career success achieved in France and England.
Didier Drogba also won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2006/2007 and 2009/2010 scoring 104 goals in the Premier League. His most memorable goal however, was the late equalizer for Chelsea against Bayern Munich during the 2012 Champions League finals. Chelsea went on to win the cup on penalties.
He played his last game for Phoenix on November 8, in the USL Cup final against Louisville City; a game his side lost 1-0.
