Chinese Consulate in the Pakistani port city of Karachi came under attacked early Friday by unidentified gunmen. At least two policemen were killed with one security guard critically injured, according to officials.

The Chinese Consulate is home to diplomats and other staff.

The attackers were able to breach the main gate and managed to enter the building, according to authorities. Mohammad Ashfaq, the local police chief, said there was an ongoing shootout and at least one attacker has reportedly been killed.

In a phone call to the news agency Agence France-Presse, a Pakistani separatist group claimed responsibility for the attack.

It is doubtful that this ugly incident will affect the Chinese – Pakistani relationship, which has seen China in recent years pouring billions of dollars into Pakistan as part of its huge Belt and Road infrastructure initiative.
