Banky W also known as Mr Capable is a Nigerian R&B Singer, songwriter, actor and performer. This article is about his biography, career, awards and others.
Banky W, whose real names is Oluwabankole Wellington was born on the 27th of March, 1981 in the USA to Nigerian parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Bankole wellington. After spending few years in the US, Banky returned to Nigeria with his parents when he was about five years old and he began singing in the church choir at an early age of 8 years.
He completed his primary and secondary school at the Home Science Association Secondary School and thereafter got a scholarship to study at a college in New York; and bagged a degree in Engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
While in college, Banky W was given an opportunity to participate in the Albany Idol competition and he ended up winning the competition.
Upon his modest success and fame in the United States, Banky launched his music career by floating his own record label called the ‘EME’ records, Empire Mate Entertainment and then dropped his first EP titled ‘Undeniable’ in 2013, which was sold on the internet.
Interestingly, the EP got the attention of Fox 23 News in New York and later earned him a distribution deal with Trans World, a North- American Music distributor. This feat won him 2003 artist of the Year at the Urban Independent Music Awards.
In 2005, Banky W dropped his debut album titled ‘Back in the Building’ which included a single ‘My Regret’; a song that won him accolades and got him a lucrative US Publishing deal. This basically, opened doors for him to feature on AOL with MTV’s Xzibit and gracing many magazines covers in addition to touring everywhere in America and Europe.
Afterwards, he decided to bring his success back to Nigeria on the sole mission to showcase and expose Africa music to the world. He released his highly anticipated second studio album titled ‘The W Experience’ in 2009; which was a strong contender for the Best Album in Africa. He released his remix of Rihana’s ‘Umbrella’ which became an instant hit in the country and announced his arrival on the scene.
Consequently, Banky signed Wizkid, Skales and Shaydee into the EME records label and groomed them into successful artists until their contracts expired. Banky W again released another album titled ‘R & BW’ which had singles like ‘Yes/No’, and ‘Lowkey’ and it received massive airplay on radio and TV stations across the country.
Mr Capable is also a philanthropist who has given his resources for laudable causes; and most notably launched the ‘I Am Capable’ scholarship to fund education for students; who meet the requirements to study at private universities but are unable to afford it.
In 2016, Banky W got an acting role to feature in the Nollywood movie titled ‘The Wedding Party’ 1 & 2, which both were block busters and have become the highest grossing Nollywood movies of all time.
