Bet Awards Best International Act: Africa Category, List Of Past Winners

The BET Awards is here again as the nominations for the various award categories are already out.

The full nomination list was released on the 15th of may 2018, and the Main event is set to take place on Sunday june 25th, 2018 at the Microsoft Theater, Los Angeles, California, United State.

The BET Awards has been on since 2001, but the category for the best international act, Africa was just added in 2011. From 2011 to 2012, the award was a joint category award received by two of the nominees, but from 2013 till date, the award has now become a solo one.

Since the inception of this BET Awards category, a total of 5 Nigerian artistes have won it and again two Nigerian artistes has been nominated for this year’s event.

Here is a list of past winners of the BET Awards best international act: Africa Category…

2011 : 2 Face Idibia / D’Banj

The 2011 edition of the BET Awards, which was the first for this particular category, saw the likes of Teargas from South Africa, Fally Ipupa from DR Congo, Tuface Idibia from Nigeria, D’Banj from Nigeria, D Black from Ghana and Angelique Kidjo from Benin Republic all beign nominated for this category.

2 face Idibia at the time, was unstoppable in the African music industry, with the success of his ‘ Unstoppable International Edition ‘ Album , with singles like Enter The Place and Fly, rocking both the international and local air waves.

Also, D’banj at the time was also a force to reckon with all over Africa at a period when the MO’ Hits all stars were still at it’s best.

Both Artistes won the Award, which was presented to them at the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, California on the 26th of June, 2011.

2012 : Sarkodie / Wizkid

The second edition of this BET Awards Category saw the likes of Wizkid from Nigeria, Sarkodie from Ghana, Ice Prince from Nigeria, Camp Mulla from Kenya, Lira from South Africa and Mokobe from Mali all been nominated.

The duo of Sarkodie and Wizkid clinched this year’s award as both were on their best form at this period.

Wizkid at this period was at the peak of his career. Young and hardworking, his ‘Super Star’ album was blasting beyond the shores of Africa and the Organizers took note of this.

Sarkodie, the African rap king, whose blend of classic West Africa highlife music and Hip Hop was undoubtedly extraordinary, made him an unstoppable force to be reckoned with.

2013 : Ice Prince

In  2013, the Organizers decided that the BET Awards was no longer going to be a joint one, but a solo one.

The category which was keenly contested by the likes of 2face Idibia from Nigeria, Ice Prince from Nigeria, R2Bees from Ghana, GoodLyfe Crew from Uganda, Toya Delazy from South Africa and Donald also from South Africa, saw Ice Prince taking the Award home.

The Chocholate City Rapper became the first in history to clinch the Award all to himself, as his song Oleku was trending all over Africa at the moment.

2014 : Davido

Davido was the man of the moment in 2014, as he had so many songs blowing the air waves especially the Aye song which clinched other awards the same year.

The contenders for this year’s award included Sarkodie from Ghana, Tiwa Savage from Nigeria, Diamond Plantnumz from Tanzania, Toofan from Togo and Mafikizolo from South Africa.

Davido received the Award at the Nokia Theater, Los Angeles, California on the 29th of june, 2014.

2015 : Stonebwoy

The 2015 edition of the BET Awards was a very controversial one as a higher percentage of the public were of the notion that Stonebwoy didn’t deserve the status at the moment compared to the other nominees, although the Dance Hall great Ghanain artiste was at his best form for the year.

Other nominees for this category included wizkid and Yemi Alade both from Nigeria, AKA and The Soil both from South Africa, Stonebwoy and Sarkodie both from Ghana, Fally Ipupa from DR Congo and Sauti Sol from Kenya.

2016 : Black Coffee

In a year where everyone thought that without any doubts, the award was going to be clinched by the sensational Nigerian Pop star, Wizkid, who was topping charts all over the world, the south African Award winning record producer and Dj, Black Coffee, won it.

A host of other deserving African talents who were nominated for this category included Cassper Nyovest from South Africa, Yemi Alade from Nigeria, Black Coffee from South Africa, MzVee from Ghana, AkA from South Africa, Diamond Plantnumz from Tanzania, Serge Beynaud from Ivory Coast and of course, Wizkid from Nigeria.

The Electronic Music champion who has been in the game since 1995, was deemed fit by the organizers to clinch this award, despite Wizkid being the clear favourite.

2017 : Wizkid

Wizkid made history in 2017 as the first ever to win the BET Awards twice. Wizkid first won the award in 2012, jointly with Sarkodie. In a year where every Nigerian artiste was releasing a hit song, wizkid soared above all.

This year saw four Nigerians being nominated for this category with the likes of Davido, Teckno and Mr Eazi losing to their Home boy. Other nominees included Stonebwoy from Ghana, Babes Wodumo, Nasty c and AKA from South Africa.

This year’s nominees are Davido and Tiwa Savage both from Nigeria, Cassper Nyovest and Distruction Boyz both from South Africa and Fally Ipupa from DR congo alongside their International counterparts.
