Kiernan Jarryd Forbes who is known with the stage name AKA is a South African rapper, Hip-Hop and pop artist, record producer,and businessman. He is also identified with the name Supa Mega. He was born on the 28th of January 1988 in Lavender Hill, Cape Town, South Africa. The talented rapper attended Greenside Primary school in Ranbury and later St. John’s College for the completion of his primary and secondary school education respectively. He later furthered his education studying Engineering.

AKA began his music from humble beginnings; his early years were spent with his grandmother while his father worked in an Insurance company and his mother, a school teacher.
AKA started his music career in a rap group called Entity which consisted of three members.The rap group began in 2002 and earned a large number of successes; topping in South Africa’s music chart with some different released singles. However, after some years, the rap group started to have some problems from within, the members were expressing different visions, desires,and plans for their future, and also embarking on several solo projects. The group later separated in 2006, the group members moving into different paths. He stayed low for some years after the break of the group and started his own production company called I.V League in 2007 alongside two of his colleagues, Kamza and Buks. He re-emerged as a solo act in 2009 when he came out with hit singles like ‘In My Walk,’ ‘Problem’ and ‘Do It.’ ‘Do It’ peaked to number one on South Africa 5FM Top 40.
AKA accused his record label, Vth Season of not being fair in the payment of his royalty via social media in October 2016, he also announced his leaving of the record label warning his fellow record label mates, rapper YanyaNtshakasa, Tresor and Johnson to get their personal accounts and the record label’s financial statement investigated.
AKA first album, ‘Alter Ego’ was released on the 23rd of August 2011. Before the release of the album, he released three hit songs; the lead hit song being ‘I Want It All’ where he featured two rappers, PRO and Khuli Chana and it was released on the 28th of July 2010. The second song was ‘Victory Lap’ released on the 3rd of December 2010, the last being ‘All I Know’ was released on the 11th of July 2011. The single, ‘Victory Lap’ brought him to the limelight earning him the Most Gifted Hip-Hop Video award at the 7th annual Channel O Music Video Awards,and he was also awarded the Best Street Urban Music Album and Male Artist of the Year at the 18th South African Music Awards(SAMA). The album ‘Alter Ego’ was a total success and won him various awards like Best Hip-Hop Album, Best New Comer and Best Produced Album awards at the Metro FM Music Awards on the 26th of November 2011 at the Mbombela Stadium in Mbombela Mpumalanga.
The award-winning rapper later released four singles, ‘Jealousy,’ ‘Congratulate,’ ‘Kontrol’ and ‘Run Jozi.’ He released his second album titled ‘Levels’ on the 30th of June 2014,but the hard copy of the album was not able to be released due to manufacturing problems. The hard copy was later released on the 28th of July 2014. ‘Levels’ also won him several awards such as Best Male, Video of the year (for ‘Congratulate’) and Best Collaboration (for ‘Run Jozi’) at the South African Hip Hop awards in 2014. He signed a multi-album deal with Sony Music through its Record label South African Recording in 2014. On June 2015, the album ‘Levels’ was certified Gold by the Recording Industry of South Africa and was later certified platinum in May 2016. After much success in the Music Industry, he was tagged ‘The Prince of South African Rap.’ He released a single titled ‘The World is Yours’ on 2nd of December 2016, it was premiered at the end of Idols Season 12 finale on the 27th of November 2016. ‘The World is Yours’ music video was shot in Thailand where he was on vacation and was released on the 2nd of February 2017. The single topped charts and earned triple platinum from the Recording Industry of South Africa.
AKA third album titled ‘Touch My Blood’ was released on the 15th of June 2018. The album was also a huge success and garnered him some awards.
AKA has opened the stage for big international acts the likes of Kanye West, Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, and many more on their tours in South Africa.
As a record producer, AKA has produced music for the likes of Shugasmakx, Jae, Teargas PRO, Andile and the list goes on. He has associated with several popular artists including K.O, Tweezy, Burna Boy, Da L.E.S, Anatii, Yanga Chief, Diamond Platnumz, Wizkid, Sardokie, Ice Prince, Khuli Chana and Stonebwoy.
AKA has come to be one of the most significant Hip-Hop artists in Africa and is well known for his part in the growth of Hip-Hop in Africa. He is a big motivation to upcoming rap artistes due to his rapid rise to fame.

AKA was until June this year in a relationship with Bonange Matheba, a South African television and radio personality, model and entrepreneur. They were known popularly as the power couple.
AKA was rumored to be in a relationship at one time with DJ Zinhle which was not confirmed at the time. She was later rumored to be pregnant with AKA’s child which came to fruition. She gave birth to their daughter Kairo Owethu Forbes but however, the couple broke up as well. The break up was quite messy for many months because he began dating Bonange Matheba during their affair. However, he took to the Social media this year and made a public announcement, apologizing for his mistakes towards the mother of his child. However, this was after he announced his split with Matheba.
